午後２時前、
南海堺駅前の乗船場到着。予約していた事を告げ、名簿に氏名年齢を記入して船を待つ、船の名前はフェニックスといい、ＮＰＯ環濠クルーズSakaiの所有で１艘のみでの運行を行っています。

待ち時間にスタッフに話を聞きました。スタッフは皆ボランティアで暑い夏と寒い冬を除き土日に５回位運行しているそうです。メンバーは４０名ほどで運転は小型船舶操縦免許と船長資格を持った人が２０名ほど、他の方はガイドとして乗船、運営しているそうです。ガイドは皆さんで決めた説明枠のなかで個人がそれぞれ工夫して案内をするそうです。個性が出ます、歌を歌う方もいらっしゃるとか。環境問題に取り組むＮＰＯらしく、乗船場の雰囲気は優しくのんびりした感じです。そのうち船が到着、ライフジャケットを着けて乗り込みます。定員は１８名船外機の小さなボートです。

さあー出発、まず土井川を南の方へゆっくり進みます。フェニックス通りの橋などをくぐりしばらく行ってＵターン、岸にはアオサギが１匹たたずんでいます。水面を跳ね上がるのはボラです。十数年前はゴミだめのようなどぶ川が、行政や、自治会、ＮＰＯなどのたくさんの人たちの努力でかなりきれいな水となりました。定期的に行っている清掃活動でゴミも浮いていません。魚も多く戻ってきたそうで、乗船場付近でボラやスズキが釣れるそうです。驚きました。水面近くに顔があるのに臭いもしません。そうするうちザビエル公園の横にくると岸には桜の木があり花の季節にはライトアップするそうです。そのときに夜間クルーズをしてみたいと思いましたが、夜間運行は難しいのでしてなくて残念。月州中学校で再びＵターン、この中学校は２重窓になっているそうで、その昔の川は悪臭がすごかったのだとの説明に納得。
ふたたび元来た方へ、ほとんどの橋をくぐるときは水面との高さが低く、船長さんの合図で頭を下げなくてはけがをします。ゆっくり進みますが、スリルがあります。そうこうするうちに出発地点を通り過ぎ、竪川水門を通り堺旧港へ進んでいきます、進行右手には龍女神像が見えてきます。岸辺では釣り人が２人竿を出していました。左手には木製の大浜灯台

がこぢんまりと建っています。海に出ると風も違うように感じます。時計を見るとすでに４５分くらい経過、これで見るところはすべて見ました。乗船場に戻ったのが５０分、ゆったりと川面から両岸の景色を見、６００年位前の中世環濠都市の堺を想像する、また、環境考える良い機会になりました。
